How To Get Out of Rut: A Few Strategies to Help You Get Unstuck

Feeling down in the dumps lately?

Tired of the way things are in life?

Angry about the cause and actions of what’s happening downtown?

Sick of feeling stuck in a mindless routine day after day?

We all go through times when it feels like we’re in a rut. It’s not uncommon to feel like you’re just going through the motions, treading water, or jogging in place. If these thoughts seem all too familiar, then it might be time to hit the reset button.

We can’t always plan for the bumps in the road that bring us down or throw a wrench in our plans. Perhaps there’s been no better lesson in resilience that what we’ve experienced during the COVID-19 outbreak. We were all forced to adapt to change and face challenges head-on.

Sometimes changes in life are big (like COVID-19 or social unrest). Other times changes are small but they still have a BIG impact on the way we feel. The good news is, no matter how tough the times, you have the power to change your life. Start by making a few small changes in your routine and mindset that can give you the boost you need to move forward in health and happiness.

Review Your Sleep Routine

Do you get enough sleep? Perhaps you sleep too much? Either way, poor sleep routine can greatly impact the way you feel. In fact, irregular sleep patterns are a sneaky sign of depression.

Try to unplug at least one hour before bed. Disconnect from technology and let the stress of the day fade away. Try reading or meditating to relax and unwind. Don’t overstimulate with television and/or technology.

Let Go Of The Victim Mentality

Self-pity can be very destructive. One big problem a lot of people have is that they slip into thinking of themselves as victims that have little or no control over their lives. When you let go of this type of thinking, you can boost your self-esteem and move forward in confidence and positivity.

Again, letting go of the victim mindset starts by building resilience. When you accept change, adversity, and wrongdoing, you can start to nurture an ongoing positive outlook in life. Focus on what you can control- not what others have done. Take responsibility and find ways to move forward instead of dwelling in the past.

End Bad Habits

We all have bad habits to some extent. All too often, people turn to bad habits when they lose meaning in their lives and become disinterested. You can help kick bad habits and mindless routines to the curb by finding hobbies that interest you.

Try something new! Finding a hobby is rewarding. Channel your energy into a yoga class, scrapbooking, art, woodworking, learning a new language – the possibilities are endless! Hobbies help us find balance and are healthy outlets for stress.

Of course, overcoming adversity in life is not easy. Some people need help on their journey. We’re here for you through the tough times.
